Abu Dhabi Khalifa Port ready for SOLAS convention
29  2016

From the 1st of July 2016 onwards all containers need to be provided with a verified gross mass (VGM) prior to stowage aboard ship. The actual VGM is allowed to deviate from maximum 5% than the adviced VGM. This new regulation  by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is part of the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention.

Due to overweight containers or wrong documents weights many accidents happens every year. As from the 1st of July containers need to be weighed before shipment to reduce these accidents. The responsibility is on the shipper. Abu Dhabi Terminals ensures that Khalifa Port is compliant with these requirements. The weighing technology is integrated in the stacking cranes.
